Cette histoire de la médecine fut rédigée alors qu'il était emprisonné à la Tour de Londres pour haute trahison. Après avoir été reconnu innocent et après avoir soigné avec succès le premier ministre Sir Robert Walpole, il fut libéré rapidement.

Mead refused to treat Walpole until Freind was released, and this was speedily arranged!].
