Perceval de Loriol (1828-1908) was a Swiss palaeontologist and stratigrapher, who worked during fourty years at the Natural History Museum of Geneva. He was one of the founders of the Schweizerische Paläontologische Gesellschaft.
The Salève is particularly rich in fossils. There are more than 700 species of invertebrates in the interval from the Upper Jurassic to the Quaternary, the study of which is far from being completed. This work by Loriol remains an important reference on the subject.
