Translated from Polish by the pimple of Solignac.
In 1736, at the end of a war of succession which opposed French and Russian interests, Stanislas I, King of Poland, abdicated.
It is therefore as a free-speaking citizen that he writes his observations on the government of Poland.
Prince philosopher he writes in his preface:
"[our ancestors] established a fair balance between the power of Majesty, & the rights of liberty. They claimed that our Kings by the Majesty of their character, could contain liberty to prevent it from going as far as license, and that liberty, by the authority of our constitutions, could repress the ambition of our kings, if it ever led them to despotism. This salutary order no longer exists.".

Jean Le Clerc (1657-1736) was a Protestant theologian and pastor. He was a member of the Remontrants, disciples of Arminius, breaking with Calvinism on questions of grace and predestination. The lottery and games of chance, then very popular in the Netherlands, were an ideal subject for reflection on these subjects. By rejecting any idea of an "invisible hand" behind chance or good fortune, he ends up with an ultimately very modern definition of chance:
"Tous ces mots ne sont que des termes négatifs, comme je l'ai dit, & qui ne servent qu'à faire comprendre que l'effet, dont on parle, n'est pas la production d'une cause nécessaire & déterminée à la produire".
In other words, we speak of chance where we do not know the sum of the causes that determine the effect that we observe.

The version commented by Jean Tournet of the Coutume de Paris will be the legal reference throughout the seventeenth century.
The Coustumes de Paris, revised in 1605, constitute the body of legal texts which will apply to the jurisdiction of the Parliament of Paris (and therefore almost to all of France) until the drafting of the Napoleonic Civil Code. They are, moreover, one of the major sources of inspiration for the Civil Code.

Pierre de Besse, preacher from the beginning of the 17th century was inspired by the Greek philosopher Heraclitus, whose legend, peddled by Diogenes Laerce, said that he was perpetually in tears in front of the fate of men to draw from it a Christian Heraclitus desperate for the sins of the Men.
He will publish 3 years later the "Christian Democrite" showing a hilarious Democrite in front of the world as it is.
These two books did a lot to popularize the archetypes of a weeping Heraclitus and a laughing Democritus, which can be found in many works of art throughout the 17th century. One thinks in particular of the "Weeping Philosopher" of Rubens painted around 1636, or the Democrites of Velasquez and Rembrandt.

Gabriel Bonnot de Mably was Condillac's brother, although today less known than his parent, his innovative work of political philosophy places him among the precursors of what will become communism. In particular, he proposed to limit land ownership rights.
As a fine geopolitical analyst, he published his Treaty of Negotiations at the start of the Seven Years' War, after the overthrow of the alliance which will set Europe (and the world) on fire.
"His concepts of power, of world legal order, of moralizing the relations between people, peoples and states, undoubtedly still have a lot to teach us." Florence Gauthier, Extract from the preface for the reissue of the text in 2003
Our copy bearing the arms of Emmanuel Dieudonné de Hautefort (1700-1777), a diplomat who was french ambassador to Vienna from 1749 to 1752 and who was therefore at the heart of European diplomacy in this troubled period of the 18th century. It was indeed during this period that negotiations between France and Austria began to initiate a European diplomatic revolution.

Monumental impression for the description of the Moulins bridge built from 1754 to 1762 under the direction of Louis de Règemortes, engineer of bridges and roads: Plans, sections, elevations and maps.
Note the impressive fifth plank measuring over 1.80m long representing the foundations of the bridge.
"The work that has illustrated his name is the construction of the Moulins bridge, for which several unsuccessful attempts had been made in the previous century. The success of the project drawn up by Louis de Règemorte is mainly due to the establishment of a general masonry base. , strongly defended against the action of water, with unsinkable longitudinal levees attached to the wedges, to prevent the disastrous effect of scouring and flooding which had brought the ruin of the works undertaken on the same point from 1679 to 1689. " Tarbé de Saint-Hardouin (Biographical notes on the engineers of the bridges and roads since the creation of the body, in 1716, until our days, Baudry, 1884)
The now "Pont Règemortes" still crosses the Allier more than 250 years more late proof of the success of the engineer.
