Nicolas Lefèvre [id is Le Febvre] was a chemistry teacher at the Jardin des Plantes. He then became a member of the Royal Academy in London, a city to which he had come at the request of King Charles II of England.
A skilful chemist, people in the art praise the exactness with which he describes the operations and reports their results. It also indicates the means of recognizing fraud in pharmaceutical preparations.
A great admirer of Paracelsus, he claimed to have discovered, like him, a secret for restoring or maintaining all the vigor of youth in advanced age.
His chemistry course was a great success, went through several editions and was translated into several languages.

First edition in French of Halley's astronomical tables after the original in Latin of 1749.
The first volume supervised by Chappe d'Auteroche presents the tables of the Sun and the Moon with additions by Le Monnier.
The second volume supervised by Jérôme De Lalande presents the tables of planets and comets, and is preceded by a translation of the theory of comets by Halley.
More than the Halley's text, Lalande presents for the first time his account of the return of the 1682 comet in 1759. Lalande's work is indeed published shortly after the return of the 1682 comet (henceforth called "Halley's comet") whose the English scientist had predicted, according to the Newtonian equations, the passage in the terrestrial sky at the end of the year 1758 or the beginning of the year 1759... which was indeed the case.
This experimental proof of the theories of Newton was a milestone in astronomy.

A brilliant mathematician, misunderstood in his day and with a tragic fate (he died at the age of 20 in a gallant duel), Galois created the notion of group, and his work has inspired generations of mathematicians.
A brilliant student, he was misunderstood by his contemporaries. Poisson rejected the work he wanted to present to the Paris Academy of Sciences.
In 1832, on the eve of his fatal duel, Galois wrote his mathematical will, which he entrusted to a friend.
It was not until 1846 that Liouville published them in this volume of the Journal des mathématiques, and not until 1870 that Jordan recognized their importance.
"When, yielding to the wish of Evariste's friends, I gave myself up, as it were under the eyes of his brother, to the attentive study of all the printed or manuscript pieces he left behind, I therefore thought I had to propose as my sole aim to seek out, to unravel, to then bring out as best I could, what was new in these productions.
My zeal was soon rewarded, and I was delighted when, after filling in a few small gaps, I recognized the complete accuracy of the method by which Galois proves, in particular, this beautiful theorem: For an irreducible equation of prime degree to be solvable by radicals, it is necessary and sufficient that all the roots be rational functions of any two of them.
This method, truly worthy of the attention of geometers, would alone suffice to secure our compatriot a place among the small number of scientists who have earned the title of inventor." (Liouville p.382).

Very rare copy with title page in unlisted condition in the name of Jacques Le Gras.
Descartes wrote this treatise in 1632 and 1633. He defended in particular the heliocentric system of Copernicus, but following Galileo's condemnation, he gave up publishing this work during his lifetime. It will not be finally published, according to his will, until after his death. At the end of 1663, the Le Gras and Clerselier family will dispute the privilege of publishing the posthumous works of Descartes. For the "World" it is Jacques Le Gras who will be the first to deposit the privilege. (cf. CARTESIAN BULLETIN V. (1976). Archives de Philosophie, 39 (3), 445–494) Jacques Le Gras, the holder of the privilege, then shared it with Thomas Girard (his brother-in-law) and Michel Bobin.
Our title page is unknown to Tchermerzine and Guibert as well as to Mathias Van Otegem who in his bibliography of the works of Descartes published in 2002, after consulting the copies in public libraries, describes only four states of the title page of this edition.
Our copy therefore presents a fifth state of the still unpublished title page.
Our title page has the same typographical mark as the Thomas Girad state (6 fleurons) canonically considered to adorn the true first edition. In addition, like the copy "Thomas Girad" from the Munich library (BSB: Rar. 4594) our title page is margined shorter than the rest of the book body and printed with the same characters, which suggests an impression at the same time.
The copies having a recomposed title page with a typographical mark "à l'oiseau" only coming, according to bibliographers, in a second step.
"In Le Monde, Descartes wants to ruin the concepts of scholasticism, and 'evacuate' Aristotle's physics, by giving a physical interpretation of the new heliocentric astronomy. As opposed to traditional finalism, he envisions, in the form of a "Fable", the mechanical formation of the cosmos, from an initial state of chaos (pieces of matter of various shapes and sizes agitated by all-out movements) and only by virtue of the general laws of nature: principle of inertia, laws of the communication of movement, etc ... This second edition brings together the Theory of the Moon and the Tables of the Moon published by Clairaut in 1752 and 1754 which are the first approximate resolution of the three-body problem. Between 1747 and 1754, three of the greatest mathematicians of their time, Euler, D'Alembert and Clairaut, opposed each other on a common project: to develop new mathematical methods in order to resolve the complex problems posed by the movement of the Moon, subject to both to the gravitational pull of the Earth and the Sun. The issue was both scientific and economic since the establishment of precise astronomical tables was necessary for the reliability of navigation at sea.

Deciphering of the hieroglyphic language by Champollion.
The Rosetta Stone, brought back by the Napoleonic expeditions to Egypt, gave the same text in three different languages, it is the key that gave Champollion the understanding of the language of the ancient Egyptians.
After laying down the principle of phonetic writing in 1822 in his Letter to M. Dacier, he continued his work and his demonstrations until he had an intimate knowledge of this language: "It is a complex system, a writing at the same time figurative, symbolic and phonetic, in the same text, the same sentence, I would almost say in the same word"
His Precis of the hieroglyphic system gives us with many examples an unprecedented understanding of hieroglyphs, thus cutting the grass under the feet of his opponents (and competitors) such as Thomas Young.

Assistant to Réaumur then to Nollet, Brisson became a professor of physics at the College of Navarre and then at the Ecole Centrale. He began to publish his Elementary Treaty of Physics in 1789. This third edition of 1800 was supplemented by a new volume on chemistry to serve as a follow-up to physics.

A famous merchant born in 1622 in Doué (Anjou) from a noble family, Savary became a wealthy merchant and retired from business at the age of 36. He was chosen by Colbert to be one of the writers of the commercial code of 1673 which was called "Code Savary". He wrote in 1675 the "Perfect trader" which is the compilation of the knowledge he had gathered for the drafting of the ordinance. The legal solutions are clear, sensible, practical, honest. The book is a business bible whose importance Max Weber underlined. This work became a classic, reprinted many times and translated into German, English and Italian.

Book revised and published by Diderot from a manuscript by Ferdinando Galiani, in which the latter expresses reservations about the free trade in grain adopted by the edicts of 1763 and 1764.
Galiani is indeed opposed to the export of wheat outside France, while French regions may still experience periods of famine.
This is one of the first criticisms of nascent economic liberalism.
What will be worth to him to be strongly attacked by the spirit of time, Turgot judging that the step of Galiani is representative of the stubborn refusal, and obscurantist, of the scientific novelty.

After experimental aerodynamic tests obtained by free fall from the second floor of the tower he had built on the Champ de Mars in Paris, Gustave Eiffel had a wind tunnel built there in 1909. It was made up of a vein of tests of 3 meters in diameter over a length of 2.5 meters. The flow, generated by a propeller driven by a 70hp engine, could vary between 5 and 20 meters per second. The installation was enclosed in a 240 square meter hangar so as not to be influenced by the outside wind. This installation was used, in particular, for testing the Eiffel wing profiles which would equip a large number of French aircraft from the First World War. It was moved to Auteuil in 1912 and is still in operation today, operated by the Aérodynamic Eiffel company.
